Firefighters have a reputation for loving to cook – and to eat, and cooking contests among fire halls are a social and fundraising staple nationwide. The Toledo Volunteer Firefighter Association (TVFA) is turning the idea on its head with its new “Feed a Firehall” program. Local chefs, both home cooks and professionals, are signing up for a chance to cook at the Toledo Fire Hall before the TFVA’s monthly business meetings, on the second Wednesday of each month. The Association provides a grocery budget, the kitchen, and any requested assistance. Toledo firefighter Larry Silva, who is coordinating the program said, “Please come and express your Inner Chef!” The first chef to sign up was Rocky Earl-Silva, who is head chef at Gracie’s Sea Hag in Depoe Bay. The entrees included Boiled Crab and Chicken Dijon with salad and sides and pies donated by Chalet Restaurant in Newport.
